God of Wonders was written by Marc Byrd and Steve Hindalong for the album "City of A Hill", a compilation cd recorded with the idea of community in mind. Hindalong explains, "Our concept of community was one that takes the emphasis off of the particular artist and places it where it belongs-- in worship and exaltation of God." God of wonders is a simple declaration of the holiness and majesty of God. According to the group Third Day who appeared on the original recording, and then released a very popular version of the song they at first passed on recording the song, not feeling that the song was right them. Hindalong had a different idea, and later convinced them to record part of the song. It has since become one of the most popular songs on the radio and in worship. Hindalong says "The second verse to me is where the song really has its power. It says 'when I stumble in the darkness, I will call your name by night.' I wanted to say that the God we worship is that big and vast, beyond even our world, but yet He listens to us when we're in trouble and He cares for us like a loving, tender Father. That's a powerful truth, that song, and it's a privelege to offer something like that."
